Since the campaign, it was vital to Adelita Grijalva that the District 5 office worked with the community to recover and prosper together. Historically, District 5 has had strong leaders like David Yetman, Congressman Raúl Grijalva, Richard Elías, and Betty Villegas. District 5 wanted to honor their legacies and started working to create a blueprint for what the office would accomplish with the community.
Past District 5 leaders taught us that we are first and foremost, public servants who cannot and should not do this alone. The role of our community isn’t to be at the will of its leadership, but integral to the decisions and service we provide to everyone living in Pima County.
In January of this of 2021, we began drafting a Mission and Vision statement. We identified about forty community leaders to work with us in the formulation of a plan. We had amazing people join us with expertise spanning labor, housing, environment, education, community organizing, business, and more.
This was a rewarding project but very challenging. We had a very hard time narrowing down the goals, setting realistic timeframes and balancing the urgent needs that seem to arise daily. Together, we did it and we created a strategic plan for District 5!
